Day 13 - the hills are alive

Kergunyah to Myrtleford 57km

Colour me pleasantly surprised, last night's choir were all off to bed by 2200.  So I actually felt bad when our alarm broke the sunday morning quiet at 0600.  But we wanted to be up and riding with the birds, in the cool and damp of the first few hours of daylight.  This does not mean we skipped breakfast (heaven forbid).  However the campground was sadly lacking in any kind of facilities, so we just used the laundry/storeroom as our breakfast nook.  The resident frog was not amused, and hid behind the washing machine.

The first 10kms were glorious, cool and quiet, shared only with the birds and the bucolic countryside.  This is dairy country, and cows are an ever curious audience, pausing their day to watch us go by.  The hills introduced themselves just as the day warmed up.  With an 18km climb ahead that I was not looking forward to.  Kerstin was very kind when I miss read the map, and added another 4km to our day.  This detour did however bring us to Dederang, whose slogan is 'the cream of the country'.  Yay for cows!

What followed was a slog, I was hot and my legs hurt, and the bloody flies would not leave me alone.  I would take any excuse to stop, even vivid green, very warm Gatorade.

The upside of hills, aside from the music, are the views.  The Great Dividing Range was spread out before us, and it was pretty spectacular.  The other fabulous thing is free-wheeling down afterwards!

As we turned south towards Myrtleford, the wind was behind us, and the last 25km just zoomed under our tyres.  To find ourselves in a town awash with tourists, the caravan park is chockers, but very well set up.  And nowadays, with almost everyone bringing everything, including the kitchen sink, along in their vans.  Kerstin and I often find ourselves in the camp kitchen, BBQ, laundry, pool and right now the lounge, all by ourselves.  So, I'm off to lay on the couch, totally earned it.

PS.  Happy Birthday to a certain pair of someones who turned 10 today, woo how!

  1. I've just binged all your blog posts so far. The trip sounds pretty amazing. We had some beautiful blueberries in Myrtleford - did you happen to venture into the farm just to the west of the town?
