Day 3 - In the immortal words of Darryl Kerrigan... 'We're goin' to Bonnie Doon'
Molesworth to Mansfield (via Bonnie Doon) 70km
Today we had the very great pleasure to ride along the Great Victorian Rail Trail for the entire day. A rough gravel double track, with plenty of shade, that we had mostly to ourselves. This meant that we could ride side by side and talk, which is generally pretty unusual when bike touring. I wish I could tell you that we discussed the big issues, but mostly we talked about food. When should we next eat, what do we want to eat, what do we need to get at the supermarket and how much we are looking forward to that ice cream at the end of the day.
The ride into Bonnie Doon was lovely, even if I had a certain ditty playing over and over in my head, (in Swiss German they call this an 'ear worm', perfect description). If you aren't sure what ditty I'm referencing, see title above.
Bonnie Doon itself was all the serenity you could wish for, eating lunch across from the servo, listening to the public loo doors slam and rubber necking the arrival of Ambulance Victoria to scoop up some poor old dear. Riding over Lake Eildon on the old railway bridge gave us the opportunity to feel bad for all the drivers who had to zoom over the big concrete bridge and couldn't stop to imagine the original Doon township sunk under the damn, watch the sun glint off the water. Schadenfreude at its best!
Sadly after lunch the joy of the ride was slowly overtaken by things hurting (necks, knees, elbow?), the heat of the day and possibly over ambition when planning to ride all the way to Mansfield. Luckily Kerstin saved the day by a) promising ice cream and b) distraction technique. For every km marker we each had to come up with a rhyme. Highlights included "only three, start cutting the brie" and "one, one so close to done."
Mansfield proved surprisingly busy, apparently there's a car race on... something called Targa.
How's the serenity!
Love this. "ten - more words to pen" That damn dam. Keep on great weather.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Thanks Aunty Fran xoxo
DeleteHey, I recognize that jersey! ;) Love your distraction techniques. Ah, yes the infamous ear worm, every bicycle traveler has them from time to time (also a distraction technique!). I know it's probably not the one you were hearing but I immediately thought of the movie Brigadoon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigadoon).
ReplyDeleteIf you ever get the chance to watch, we're going to Bonnie Doon, is a reference to an iconic Australian film called The Castle. Also famous for the lines 'how's the serenity' and 'this is going straight to the pool room'.
DeleteHappy cycling! Xoxo
Ooo, thanks for the extra intel on the references! Will look into the movie. Cheers!
DeleteFollowing your adventures with great admiration and jealousy, wishing I was 45 yrs younger to be able to do the same. Jessie and me wish you both safe travels.
