Day 7 - Ned Kelly rode a horse

Wangaratta, Glenrowan, Wangaratta 51km

Happy Valentines day lovely people, and Happy Birthday Jenn!

I know I was kinda hoping for breakfast in bed, or at least in tent.  But I married Kerstin, who says instead "let's get up early, and ride around a whole lot before it gets to hot".  Forecast is for 35C, so I was thinking let's lay by the pool and read.  Compromise, we ride until 1pm, then lay by the pool.

So, up early, Kerstin has to pack a whole day into her half.  We ride to Salisbury Falls, the trail ends suddenly (see pic), I feel this is a poor omen of things to come.  We ride on, then hike in to see the Falls.  Since it's summer in NE VIC there are no Falls, some very slightly wet rock was spotted.

Next item on the agenda, Bailey's of Glenrowan, where the first vintage was picked in 1870, they are famous for their fortified wines and Google maps says it is only 12kms away over some moderate hills.  Moderate!  340m of gain, 10% gradient, I was sweating like Nadal in the Aussie Open final.  To be perfectly honest I was no longer Kerstin's no.1 fan at this point.  To be totally fair the fortifieds were excellent, the history amazing, and I made sure the bottle of aged Muscat we purchased went in Kerstin's bag. Bonus points for the tradie who took one look at us preparing to ride out and offered to fill our water bottles, they were ice cold and delicious!

We decide to make our way back via Glenrowan, location of Ned Kelly's last stand.  We're 26kms from the pool, and it is 1130, I can see where this is going.  Of course, there is a headwind, the sun really has some sting, and we didn't bring lunch, see above, back by 1pm.  I'm starting to realise why Ned Kelly rode a horse.

Inevitably, time passes, so does every bloke who ever brought a Ford Ranger, and a few B-doubles.  We get back just after 2pm, all that the afternoon holds is lunch, dipping in and out of the pool, and a good book in the lounge chair.  Such is Life.

  1. I'm glad you finally got your pool dip and the good book. Yes the sun does have quite a sting these few days. We are keeping in as much as possible. But the evening breeze makes up for it. The wineries sounded fabulous. Hope no hot headwind tomorrow

  2. You are right that the trail "ends suddenly" ~ how odd!

  3. Thanks for the birthday wishes! It was a good day. Though not as wonderful as the John Butler concert I shared with you two one year... I am so enjoying reading your adventures. I hear your voices in every word you write. <3
