Day 23 - Truth in Social Media
Binalong to Yass 42km
It's not all sunshine and roses on a bicycle tour. Some days it is just hard. Today was one of those days. I had high hopes, given the short distance to cover, and the night in a proper bed. But we woke up to grey skies, more hills, sore, tired legs and the wind was even worse. The third day of headwind, I just can't stand the constant sound of it in my ears.
The only highlight of today's ride was a sheep farmer who was moving his stock on the road we were riding. Given it was called Bendeine Stock Road, this was hardly surprising. We quickly got out of everyone's way, and the farmer and his three dogs moved the sheep along. He stopped for a quick chat, the dogs swung past for a pat and I imagined him going home for lunch and him saying to his wife, "you won't believe who I met out on the road today..."
Things did not improve on the weather front, the afternoon brings both wind and rain, and enough of both to be cold and wet. We finally arrive in Yass, to a most uninspired, charmless campground. The only even slightly dry and warmish spot is in the laundry! So all our clothes get washed and put in the dryer, mainly so I have an excuse to sit in there and read.
With everything actually dry, except our shoes, and therefore our feet. Kerstin convinces me we should walk into town to warm up. She is right, of course. The 2km walk into town, kick starts a better outlook. Which is only improved upon by the application of another cheap, good and generous meal from the local RSL. Feeling warm and full, buoyed by a glass of wine, we head back to the campground. It has stopped raining, and we have the self satisfaction of using the last of the day's light to set up our little tent in the dry. So we can lay in there, warm, full and listen to the sounds of the trucks rumbling past all night. I love the sound of a diesel engine at 0500.
Ha ha ha to the 0500 comment. Uncle Joe says that "You are two very game people" The sheep look very dusty, blend into the track. We walked to Mountain Gate this morning (to get milk), not a good idea as it was quite humid. But we had our water and stopped along the way. Had visitors all week so a quiet day today and I'm planning on hand sewing most of the day. Mostly clothes for Josey. Also repairing the netting from a Barbie doll shoe holder !!! for the little girl. Picture a very colourful, with sequins eye mask with only one strap and hold it vertically. Tricks everyone when I ask what is this? Good luck tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteOne of "those" dirt roads, the true Australian bush, the farmer would have appreciated you allowing the sheep to pass through. Showing some G & D as always, well you wouldn't be out there if you didn't have that in bucket loads. My best effort is playing golf in poor weather knowing there's a refuge not too far away, also including wine.
