Day 32 - Mixed Lollies
Goulburn to Bundanoon (Morton National Park) 80km
Who remembers buying a 20c bag of mixed lollies from the local milk bar as a kid? You went in there with your hard earned pocket money clamped in a sweaty fist, and hoped that your favourites would be in that little paper bag. Today was kinda like that bag of mixed lollies. Sure some of our favourites were in there, we had some sunshine (very rare in these parts lately), some wildlife spotting (a big goanna, black cockatoos and gang gang cockatoos), friendly road workers (they are a busy bunch, fixing all the flood damage, and still find time for a friendly word to a pair of rather stinky cyclists). Right there you've got the raspberries and cream, the frogs, snakes and the jelly babies, all the best bits in that bag.
No bag of mixed lollies would be complete however without the milk bottles, black cats and that weird really stale and deformed one at the bottom. So we had miles and miles on the Hume Hwy (at least two black cats worth). There is no relief from the pollution, be it air, noise or random crap in the bike lane, what's with all the shoes? Who losses a shoe on the Hume Hwy??? And that weird stale one, we totally should have just left it in the bag, but Google Maps said "no, no, it's totally fine, get off the hwy and take these back roads". Those roads, they don't exist... so an extra 15km is added to today's total. They were very pretty back roads while the lasted, maybe a bit damp.
Back on track, we make our way, slowly over many hills to Morton National Park. Our rest stops get more frequent and in Wingello the town greeter, Otto, stopped by to say hello.
Our final destination inevitably arrives, at the bottom of an 'oh shit' descent, the locals call it Constitution Hill and you definitely need a strong constitution to ride it. The campground is like finding a red snake hiding in the bottom of the lolly bag. Pure luxury for a National Park campground, hot showers! Now we are two slightly less stinky cyclists, who are in denial that we need to ascend Constuition Hill tomorrow morning.
Such an interesting mix there. I think the descent of Constitution Hill would be like the Choo Choo Bar - lots of anticipation but tough going chewing through it.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting… you’re getting ever closer to Sydney:)
