Day 48 - Contemplations in Orange

Orange NSW  -  0 km

Against (some or all) expectations, today's post isn't a summary of wine tastings and cellar door visits. Although the writing is fuelled by a delicious and intriguing Pinot Noir from the local RIKARD label, a creation by winemaker William Rikard-Bell, wine 'only' appeared as supporting act today.

In color psychology, orange is often described as energetic, bright, happy and uplifting, calling to mind feelings of enthusiasm and excitement. And that's not exactly where we were at, with our emotions this morning. We both, albeit from different angles, immersed into a conversation about the most personal aspects of project Coddiwomple so far. This raw and open insight needed more space for contemplations and wine tasting wasn't going to be a good environment for it. We decided to spend the day low-key and low-km (no riding), allowing space for reading, writing and talking. Before I continue, please rest assured that all is good.

The Orange Visitor's Centre is in the Orange Regional Museum. It's the kind of visitor's centre that you regret not having made your first stop coming into town. A wealth of good resources, well layed-out, combined with the welcoming and very friendly voices of the local experts give us the impression, that the name of the city has been made part of its public image. This feeling is further enhanced when visiting the adjacent museum and the current exhibition called 'Inherit' which aims to bring some of the unique and common stories of the entire region to life. The 'Welcome to Country' (we are in Wiradjuri Country) in form of an animation is a moving entry into an hour of quirky and interesting bits and pieces about this place.

A can of Mount Canobolas Ozone (picture) catches the marketing mind in me. The souvenir was conceived in 1961 and was created as a fund-raiser in support of the Orange Cherry Blossom festival. The can of fresh air, reportedly collected from the highest peak between Sydney and the Indian Ocean, was sold with the slogan "in Orange they breathe all the air they can and what they can't they can".

A can of fresh air - no kidding.

By now we start to feel the color psychology is working. We refuel the mind and the stomach with comfort food and find an unexpected ally in analysing the status quo of the  Australian wine industry in a young enthusiastic woman who runs a local wine store called The Lane Cellars, one of the best boutique wine stores that we have set foot into in Australia.

We return to the comfort zone of our motel room, at peace where the day has taken us. The route tomorrow will take us north before taking a turn in an eastlery direction to Mudgee. Talking about Mudgee, one of their tourism slogans is "life is in the detours".  A line that, after today, really appeals.

Happy detours everyone and have a great week ahead!

  2. We at the farm can relate to the 'can of fresh air', it would be lovely to take it with us everywhere we go. We do bottle our 'best water in the world' and take that with us. Love the humour though, so Aussie.
