Day 57 - Feeling hot, hot, hot
Warrambungles NP to Baradine 68km (including the beer run)
After the last few weeks of cool and wet today's heat is a surprise. We start the day with good will wishes from our fellow campers. This happens a lot, often with a side eye of you guys are nuts, or better you than me! We have chosen to exit the Warrambungles stage left, or west, then to head north. And thus avoid backtracking, which Kerstin hates, and having to get back over yesterdays big hill, which I was dreading.
We decide to squeeze in a final hike to Tara cave in the park before we go. It is always nice to move in some alternative fashion, rather than always pedalling. And walking is much more conducive to conversation, much better than yelling out over wind, tyre and road noise. So after a lovely walking farewell to the Warrambungles we set off proper, by now the sun is high above and not a cloud in the sky.
We will be spending the majority of the day on local, unsealed roads, which although slower and usually further, are more enjoyable riding for the quiet and the bemused locals. Today's bemused locals included a pair of emus and two live snake spotting. Mostly we only see the flattened kind. Everyone was eager to get away from us, the cows remain persistently curious, regardless of breed.
We pop out over the Blue Hills, and onto the flat lands. Seriously the final 20km into Baradine was this long, straight, flat road, with no shade.
By the time we rolled into town Kerstin had lost patience, which is very unusual for her. I diagnosed dehydration, so we propped right outside the IGA for treatment. Which consisted of icypoles, water and gatorade. Before heading to Camp Cypress for the evening. Once we had camp all set up, Kerstin felt that further rehydration was necessary, and a beer run was made. And we closed the day rehydrated and content.
Great photos and huge distances you are covering. Keeping well away from the flooded areas.
