Day 66 - Texas QLD 4385

Ashford to Texas 74km

We roll out of charming little Ashford rather late, an overnight thunderstorm means we wait for the sun to do a little solar powered drying before heading off.  We anticipate crossing the border into QLD today, as well as reaching the 3000km milestone, so there are things to look forward too.

The route into Texas is easy to navigate, the hills on this western side of the Great Dividing Range are totally achievable with a little sweat.  There is not much to break the monotony of rolling road, cattle station, pothole, road kill.  Even finding a flat spot off the road for morning tea is tricky, and we settle for someone's driveway.   Of course the owner chooses that moment to come out but what starts as an awkward explanation of why we are sitting in her drive becomes a really nice interaction, helped along by her rescue dog, Jack.  Who sits at my feet and begs for pats.  She tells us that Texas is a really friendly town, more things to look forward too!

The number of caravans on the road steadily increases as we get closer to the Easter long weekend.   Kerstin and I keep our fingers crossed that the caravan park will find a little space for us regardless.   A spot for lunch proves just as tricky to find, but the view is pretty good.

We roll over the border, amusing the passing motorists by stopping for the obligatory photo.

Proud of ourselves

Texas was named after the largest station in the area when it was settled.  The story goes that that Station was the subject of a land dispute, just like the one between Texas and Mexico, hence the name.  Despite prior disputes, the town is amazingly friendly.  Smiles and moments of kindness abound, even the Post Office worker is super nice, which is relatively unusual for Austpost.  Dinner at China Panda, situated where else but in the bowls club, is attended by a rather adorable young staff member, so earnest is capped off by the distribution of Easter eggs to all patrons.  No wonder Lee Kernaghan wrote a song about this place.  Texas QLD 4385

  1. Well done and Happy Easter / Buona Pasqua and Frohe Ostern
You have another border crossing off you list.
Sad about the passing of the custom bicycle builder - but you have an answer now to that puzzle.
    Happy travels.
Our "easter day" here in FTG was yesterday with our girls and families. A really great, relaxing day.
My way of making sure everyone enjoys themselves is that I have everything prepared.
That way, swims and Egg Hunt and the main meal just flows.
Not many of the chocolate variety of egg gifts but thoughtful tokens exchanged.
Josey made a chowder, Becky prepared a delicate white fish and John brought and bbq'd his home-caught flounder. Salads and my bread rolls. All good.
    Happy travels
