Day 100 - A century on two wheels

Wondai to Murgon 17km

It feels as if there have been a lot of road blocks between us and Murgon.  And I was pretty dispirited this morning, as we once again woke to plenty of damp, and a catalogue of things growing mould.  Luckily, Kerstin was there to go in search of real coffee, the Wondai bakery was open, and she came back with not only an excellent coffee but a genuinely deep fried jam donut, the sun came out to dry the tent, and things were looking up.

With the Barambah river still flooding there was only one road to Murgon, the Bunya Hwy.  A dreaded secondary road, significant enough for decent amounts of traffic but not significant enough for a shoulder.  And while the drivers were courteous I was glad to exit after 10kms.  We rolled into Murgon, finally(!), and headed directly for the Post Office, where a certain care package has been waiting for us since Tuesday 3rd May.  We were quite excited to finally make it, and collect the package.  Immediately we were greeted by the friendly Murgon locals, and made our way to the library to crack open all the Queensland maps inside our package, and plan the onward journey.

With MORE rain expected we will continue to stay inland, as it is at least less rain on this side of the range.  Also, after two f@*k ups by the AEC, we now have to be in Gayndah on Friday to vote.  Don't even ask, what a palaver!

Kerstin makes friends with everyone we meet in town, the people at the sports store, random caravanning people who we meet again (for the third time), and all the ladies at the information centre are charmed, and go out of their way to be of assistance.  The free camp is basic but servicable, and we dive into our care package with glee.  Alan, has added an Easter trove to its basic replacement items, soap, tea towel, dried food, matches etc...  So dessert and snacks for the rest of the week are sorted.

What a way to celebrate 100 days on the road.

  1. 100 days A Century of days Well done. Some has been hard going. At least five hours riding to get to Gayndah to do a Pre Poll Vote (I presume). Hopefully scenic, looks as if it is near a river. That is taking you a little West, hopefully not too much off track. Are you intending to head to Childers or Maryborough or keep inland going directly North?
