Day 90 - Grounded
Palace de Malade no. 6 - Jandowae QLD
After a few intakes of Louise's culinary delights by microwave, it is uplifting to notice that my body systems are acknowledging the efforts by signalling that we are moving forward on the road to recovery. We enjoy our breakfast müesli outside, absorbing an unexpected but welcome bit of morning sunshine.
Mother's Day! A perfect day to promote some of the little wisdoms mothers have in store for you in times of sickness, in addition to stressing the importance of home cooked food (more pronounced in families with Italian heritage). I resort to another of my mother's popular remedies when battling a cold... steam inhalation!

I don't know how many hours I have spent head over a bowl with steaming hot water, infused with a few drops of eucalyptus or tea tree oil, covered by a towel, but it works a treat every time. Hang in there for 5-10 minutes and imagine you are in some Turkish hammam, just without getting your feet wet!
The other thing Mum always did, and this is very effective when dealing with fever, is frying a few chopped up onions until soft, wrap them as hot as possible into a napkin or tea towel and place on your bare chest... This one is not so practical when housing in someone else's home and sharing sleeping facilities with your loved one. So needless to mention that I didn't ask Louise to go that far.
We both feel energetic enough to go for a little stroll around town and have a closer look at the many quirky looking Bottle Trees around this place. When I stand underneath them I am envious of their bottom-heavy steadiness and how grounded they look, while I still feel wobbly on my feet.

My mind detects a resemblance to motherly care as I stand in their shade and touch the bark, secretly hoping for some magical energy transfer.
Our travels may have been temporarily grounded by the virus, but the grounding effects this break is having on us, is outweighing 'the loss' of a few days riding. All the sneezing and sniffing aside, we feel relaxed and prepared for the next chapter, whenever it may start.
Mum always made us kids do the old head under the towel/over bowl with Vicks vapour rub trick. Works great, still do it when needed. Hope you get better soon.
ReplyDeleteGreat to read all your positive comments even though still suffering some of corvids nasty impacts. Rest, rest, rest with lots of yummy foods and wine/alcohol of choice. I hope there is a local hotel or similar where booze can be purchased. Big hugs.
ReplyDeleteYes, Vicks Vapourub the 'go to' for years from my Mum then I inflicted on the girls. Build up your strength, do the first ride with a view that you may need to insert a day or two rest till back to feeling fully operational. Huge hugs too.
