Day 131 - Odds are... we will probably be alright

Winton to Corfield 86km

It is not without trepidation that we roll out of Winton this morning.  Not only is Winton a fantastic little town, where we indulge in a pub dinner, beer (XXXX, of course), a visit to the library (which was hopping) and breakfast in a bakery.  Best coffee so far, made by an imported Japanese bloke.  As we leave we agree that we need to come back at some point.

We are also embarking on the longest stretch without services we've ever undertaken, 214km to Hughenden, so we are heavily loaded with food and water.  Kerstin has the Bare Naked Ladies song, 'Odds Are' (the next line is we will probably be alright) playing in her head.  After an unfortunate incident with a documentary about bull riding, I just have that old ad jingle for the Holden Rodeo playing on repeat.

The first 20kms are quite nice, there is some interesting geography to look at, and the wind is kind.  After that.... well the geography is monotonous and the wind was not so kind, for the next 65km.  Lunch was a losing battle against the flies, and we were finally forced to crack out the fly nets, last utilised on the Oodnadatta track.

In order to give ourselves forward motivation, we plug in the earpones and I spent the last 25kms day dreaming about the beer I was going to drink at the pub in Corfield, while singing into the wind.  We are welcomed into "town" by a huge chatter of budgies, a great green and yellow flock, moving in the wind like a school of fish.

While the pub is unfortunately closed, the free camp is fantastic.  Not that it takes much to please us, a bit of flat grass, a picnic table and a drop toilet, what more do you need?  There's even some really nice tennis courts, this is not the first time we wished we had packed the rackets!  We drop some coins in the donation box for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in thanks.

Revived by a cup of tea and a piece of fruit cake, we are joined at the picnic table by the only other people here, Jo and Peter, from Cronulla, who ask the magic question, "would you like a glass of wine?"  Conversation flows, lubricated by what else but a Taylors Sav Blanc, served on ice.  Cheers!  We are more than alright.

  1. The flies - so obnoxious! Ha! Makes me think of my friend Jane who visited from Minnesota. There, when you wave your hand at the flies, they fly away…momentarily. Jane couldn’t believe the stubbornness of Aussie ‘sticky flies.’ Wave as she might, the flies stayed out! ‘These flies are STUPID!’ She cried!

Love the end of day wine reward, guys, from Cronulla!

And how the hell are you carrying water???
